The walls

The walls surrounding the Old City of Jerusalem were built by the Turkish Sultan Suleiman the magnificent in the 16th century. They are roughly based on the walls built by the Romans who, in the 2nd century, rebuilt Jerusalem after the destruction of the city caused by their war against the Jews.

Mount of Olives

According to the Jewish belief that the Messiah will ascend the Mount of Olives and that the resurrection of the dead will take place, this part of the Mount of Olives have become a burial place for the Jews of Jerusalem. According to the New Testament the Ascension of Jesus occurred on the Mount of Olives.

The Lord will stand in that day on the Mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the East; and the Mount of Olives will be split in two, from East to West, making a very great valley. (Zechariah, Chapter 14:4)
