In the 3rd Crusades it was captured again and given to the Knights Hospitalers (Knights of St. John) and for the next century it was the center of the Christian possession in the Holy Land. Acre was taken by the Ottoman Turks in 1517. In 1799 the city withstood a 61 day siege by Napoleon. In 1918 it was captured by the British troops and in 1948 Acre was captured by the Israeli forces in the Arab - Israeli war.
